Once you’ve decided that you’ll be going to a Canadian college, you’ve got the hefty job of figuring out which colleges in Canada are the best for you. The process of selection can be quite confusing if you aren’t sure just what you’re supposed to be looking for since there are quite a few good ones to choose from.

The first thing to do when choosing an education, whether you are attending a Canadian college or not, is to plan out what you need in a college. Then you can set about finding the one that fits all your needs.

1. Location, location, location. Where the college is situated will have a large bearing on your decision. Are you ready to move several provinces away to attend a good school, or are you looking for something relatively close to where you currently live. Decide just how far you are willing to go for an education before you begin your search, since this will give you an area to look at and you will eliminate a good number of colleges in Canada.

2. Price. Decide how much you can afford to pay. Some of the best schools require a large sum of money and you’ll need to decide whether or not you’ll take out a student loan. Since a student loan will impact you for a large part of your life after school, make sure you thoroughly consider whether or not the college of your choice is really worth it. Sometimes it’s worth opting for a slightly cheaper college if that means you can afford to pay it out of your pocket.

3. Size. Even big name Canadian colleges can be a bad fit if you aren’t a people person. Huge campuses with too many students aren’t for everyone. You need to select a study environment where you will be able to actually study and learn, so if having too many people around is distracting or uncomfortable, make sure you opt for a smaller campus. Of course, the opposite is also true . . . if you are a people person, you might feel stifled in a smaller college. In the end, choose what you feel more comfortable with.

4 Education. What kind of education is available at the institution that you are thinking about attending? Each college tends to have its own specialty areas, with some being better in sciences while another might offer a stellar education in languages. Since the quality of the education you get is going to be what counts once you leave the college, it pays to ensure that you are going to get that quality education.

5. Extras. You will also want to make sure that the Canadian college you are looking at has the extracurricular activities that interest you. Are you an athlete? Then look for colleges in Canada that offer athletic programs and are big on sports. Likewise, if you have an interest in drama, check that the institution you are considering has a good drama department. Extras off campus also count, places to hang out in the evenings, or to go with friends that won’t cost too much on your limited budget are always a good idea.
