The first thing one thinks of after hearing the words “preparatory school” usually has to do with money - cost. It’s a well-known fact that private schools cost money. That’s a fact. But consider the pros and cons here - in considering a prep school for your kids.
The Pros
1. Classrooms are smaller. Fewer kids per class means that 1 on 1 time with students IS possible for the teachers. Quality teaching time means kids have a better chance to learn the tasks and homework before the rest of the class moves on without them.
2. Safety. Private schools tend to be a bit better staffed - with no shortage of school faculty, the odds your children are not only monitored better but are physically in a safer environment are pretty good. This could mean less bully problems and fewer physical outbursts.
3. A well funded extra-curricular calendar. Meaning quality school trips, study classes, team and sport events. It’s all for the school spirit after all. Parents are much more likely to participate and attend mostly parent-run and supervised events.
Cons
1. Cost. With most of the school’s income being from parents directly, it is a given that parents will be expected to contribute. This means donations and support as well as ongoing fundraising efforts where you are constantly handing out money. For some folks, this isn’t even feasible.
2. Keeping up. For the student in a very dedicated private school, when it comes to academia, things are pretty serious! Students that struggle or cannot keep up very quickly fall behind. This increased pressure for performance isn’t for every kid, or family.
Whether you feel a private school is right for you and your kids, it is very important to check every potential school out thoroughly before you register your children. Ask around for references, go talk to the school dean and/or faculty. There are lots of potential options for choosing the right prep school for your kids.
″ All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.
