Educations News and Resources in Canada
College of General and Vocational Education means Cegep in French. It is a public Junior college offered in Quebec, Canada that allows students to receive a post secondary education through both high school, and college courses. There are forty eight Cegeps in Quebec, and they give some students an advantage to graduate from college in less time by combining two years of high school and three years of undergraduate courses in one school. This will help to get a student ready for college once they graduate from an undergraduate school.
The two years of post secondary consist of general classes, such as mathematics, science, writing, language, and English, with an emphasis in English and language. The three years of undergraduate college are for technical courses, such as nursing, computer programming, industrial, engineering, and theater. There are also two year vocational courses in humanities and art. The Cegeps are mainly free, with hardly any tuition costs, and the Cegeps are a college, and not a University. A student in Quebec needs to have a post secondary diploma from a Cegep college in order to be enrolled into a University. Read the rest of this entry »
There are over twenty five top private schools in Canada. Most of the private schools are either religious schools, or upper class echelon type of schools. There are a lot less private schools than there are public schools, but some parents would prefer to put their children in a private learning facility than a public one. There are a lot less students, and a lot less chance of getting into trouble in private schools, but it is also a lot harder to get into a private school. Students have to be accepted into a private school, where as anyone can go to a public school.
To be accepted into a private school, the parents need to fill out an application for the student to be admitted, and then they will need to go through an interview process where the faculty uses the interview to meet the student, and the parents to get an over all sense of their personalities. The student will need to take an SAT test, and their previous SAT scores will be checked over by the board members of the private school. The private school members also check into all other schools that a student has attended in order find out their learning development, and character, before they make their decision. The term “starving student” is one we’re all familiar with. It’s tough going paying tuition or to pay off a student loan. Buying books can also be a challenge. So why pay full price for textbooks when you can buy them 2nd hand? Or, when you are done with your books, sell them to recoup some of the money you spent.
Textbook recycling isn’t a new concept. But finding the right books in the right edition may be somewhat difficult. If you are wanting to buy or sell textbooks, all you need to do is search online and you’ll probably find the books you need. There are the usual suspect sites like Ebay, Craiglist and Kijiji. It’s only a matter of visiting the sites repeatedly until you find the exact book you are looking for.
When buying or selling used textbooks, make sure to confirm the condition of the book. A pristine condition book will always go for top dollar – but not at the full ticket value you would have spent buying new! However, as there are different types of conditions books are typically found in, you can save even more for more than “gently” used conditions.
Teaching your children at home is a big decision. Before you decide whether or not homeschooling is right for you, you need to take the following issues into consideration. After looking at these issues, you’ll know for sure whether or not you should make the leap into homeschooling.
First, think about your reasons for homeschooling. They are different for everyone but knowing your reasons can help you evaluate the decision better. There are many common reasons like the desire to give your child a religious education, the desire to cater to your child’s special needs, the desire to avoid a bad public school system or the desire to enrich their education with a unique experience.
Next, you need to realistically look at how your lives as a family will change when you start homeschooling. Normally, one parent will have to sacrifice their career and other commitments in order to home school. This can sometimes put strain on a marriage unless the family is prepared for the change. Your children will also have to get used to learning at home and listening to you in a new capacity.
Finally, you’ll also have to contend with feedback from your friends, family and other people in the community. Despite its growing popularity, homeschooling is still not accepted as a viable alternative to traditional schools. You’ll need to be firm in your commitment to homeschooling in order to overcome the negative feedback.
After you consider both sides of the issue and look at these aspects of the situation, you’ll be better prepared to make the right decision about homeschooling.
Continuing Education came into existence for adults who wished to further their education and growth as part-time students and was especially suited to students beyond the traditional age of a college student. Generally, the Continuing Education adult student already had an education and was wishing to further his or her education on a part-time basis.
Continuing Education students ordinarily enrolled in non-credit-granting schools for personal enrichment through courses offered by small community colleges. However, Continuing Education studies now largely include credit-granting colleges and universities that offer courses either in a classroom setting or through distance learning.
A number of fields have begun imposing Continuing Education requirements on licensed practitioners of particular professions. The requirements are intended to encourage professionals to maintain their training and remain current on new developments, such as Continued Medical Education. Depending on the field, Continuing Education courses are often provided by organizations that cater to specific professions, and are offered through conferences, workshops and seminars designed for particular professional Continuing Education requirements.
Continuing Education can include traditional classroom lectures and laboratories, but distance and online independent study have become very popular and effective. The use of conference group study, which can include study networks meeting online as well as seminars and workshops, can be used to facilitate learning. Continuing Education can combine any or all of the traditional, distance, online and conference type studies.
